Navajo Expedition - Journal of a Military Reconnaissance from Santa Fe, New Mexico, to the Navaho Country, Made in 1849... Navajo Expedition - Journal of a Military Reconnaissance from Santa Fe, New Mexico, to the Navaho Country, Made in 1849 (Paperback)
James H. Simpson; Edited by Frank McNitt; Foreword by Durwood Ball
R811 Discovery Miles 8 110 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In 1849, the Corps of Topographical Engineers commissioned Lieutenant James H. Simpson to undertake the first survey of Navajo country in present-day New Mexico. Accompanying Simpson was a military force commanded by Colonel John M. Washington, sent to negotiate peace with the Navajo. A keen observer, Simpson kept a journal that provided valuable information on the party's interactions with Indians and also about the land's features, including important pueblo ruins at Chaco Canyon and Canyon de Chelly. His careful observations informed subsequent military expeditions, emigrant trains, the selection of Indian reservations, and the charting of a transcontinental railroad.

Editor Frank McNitt discusses the expedition's lasting importance to the development of the West, and his research is enriched by illustrations and maps by artists Richard and Edward Kern. Military historian Durwood Ball contributes a new foreword.

Soldiers West - Biographies from the Military Frontier (Paperback, 2nd Revised edition): Paul Andrew Hutton, Durwood Ball Soldiers West - Biographies from the Military Frontier (Paperback, 2nd Revised edition)
Paul Andrew Hutton, Durwood Ball
R891 Discovery Miles 8 910 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

From the War of 1812 to the end of the nineteenth century, U.S. Army officers were instrumental in shaping the American West. They helped explore uncharted places and survey and engineer its far-flung transportation arteries. Many also served in the ferocious campaigns that drove American Indians onto reservations. Soldiers West views the turbulent history of the West from the perspective of fifteen senior army officers--including Philip H. Sheridan, George Armstrong Custer, and Nelson A. Miles--who were assigned to bring order to the region.

This revised edition of Paul Andrew Hutton's popular work adds five new biographies, and essays from the first edition have been updated to incorporate recent scholarship. New portraits of Stephen W. Kearny, Philip St. George Cooke, and James H. Carleton expand the volume's coverage of the army on the antebellum frontier. Other new pieces focus on the controversial John M. Chivington, who commanded the Colorado volunteers at the Sand Creek Massacre in 1863, and Oliver O. Howard, who participated in federal and private initiatives to reform Indian policy in the West. An introduction by Durwood Ball discusses the vigorous growth of frontier military history since the original publication of Soldiers West.

Deployed to posts from the Missouri River to the Pacific in 1848, the United States Army undertook an old mission on frontiers new to the United States: occupying the western territories; suppressing American Indian resistance; keeping the peace among feuding Indians, Hispanics, and Anglos; and consolidating United States sovereignty in the region.
